The largest part of our packaging are the cardboard boxes we use to send our products to customers. All our boxes are fully recyclable and made from FSC-certified recycled cardboard(around 70% recycled content). We have two cardboard-box suppliers, both of whom help us to achieve fully environmentally-friendly packaging. One of our box suppliers has a large solar panel array providing the energy used at their main manufacturing site. The rest of the energy is bought from suppliers that provide sustainable energy. The box delivery from the manufacturing site to our facilities is carbon neutral and is offset by the company’s partnership with the UK-based Woodland Trust. All their company cars are electric or hybrid vehicles. All the waste created in the manufacturing of our boxes is recycled and put directly back into the production of cardboard.

3 x less packaging for smaller or single‑item orders
To reduce the footprint of our packaging further, we introduced the use of paper envelopes for smaller or single-item orders. The new paper envelope uses three times less packaging than the previously-used box. This means not only fewer resources are used in creating the packaging but also less energy is used in the transportation of the parcel.
“My latest purchase arrived in a sturdy paper bag, instead of the usual box. It was a great way of sending it - particularly as the bag was rigid enough to hold the sweater in place so that it didn’t move about in the packaging as single items did in a box.”

Tissue Paper
In 2023 we switched to using tissue paper made from 100% recycled materials, like off-cuts from paper- or paper-cup manufacturing. The tree pulp used to make our tissue paper is FSC-certified and comes solely from responsibly-managed forests, which means no deforestation and the protection of biodiversity.
Our tissue paper is made in Germany and transported by road and sea, not air, to reduce its environmental footprint. The tissue paper is printed, cut and packed in Lancashire in England. As an historical ex-paper-mill our printers are set next to a river and are powered by an on-site hydro-electric turbine. The inks used are all water-based and the facility has a de-inking plant so nothing goes into the drain except clean water.

Plastic bags and hangers
In 2023 we have started using 100% recycled plastic bags in our warehouse for any re-packing needs and we have requested our suppliers to also make the same change.
Although we would like to reduce our plastic usage even more, the packaging we use ensures that our products travel safely and undamaged from our suppliers to our warehouse, and on to customers. The packaging protects the garment from wet conditions and dirt, which could result in textile waste, and for hanging garments it also helps to avoid creasing.
We are still looking for a better solution to our plastic clothes-hangers. We are continuing to test the newest alternatives available in the market.
