Whether it is your favourite chunky winter jumper or that fine and soft merino top that just feels amazing next to skin, wool is a material slightly different to others. Here are some tips and tricks to care for your wool garment:
Needs less washing than you thinkNot washing wool too often might be the most important step in making your wool garments last. Wool has amazing antibacterial and dust-repellent properties, meaning it requires much less washing than other materials. When properly cared for, items like winter jumpers may only need to be washed once or twice a season. |

Wash by handWhen a full wash is needed, the best way to clean wool garments is by hand. A simple wash in cool water with a gentle laundry liquid is ideal for removing oils and dirt from your woollen clothing. Remember to wash it inside out and not to wring your knitted garments; instead, gently squeeze out the water. Some clothing can only be dry cleaned, but if in doubt, always follow the instructions on the care label. |
No dry ironing, tumble drying and no direct sunlightJust as our hair can be damaged by dry heat, wool clothing should never be ironed without steam to avoid burning the fibres. The best way to remove creases from a wool garment is to steam it or leave it in a humid environment for a while. Do not tumble dry wool clothing. Additionally, wool should not be left in direct sunlight for extended periods, as this can cause discoloration. |
StoringA general rule for all garments is that knitted items should be stored folded to avoid losing their shape. On the other hand, woven garments should ideally be hung to prevent creases. Since wool is a protein fibre, it can attract moths, so it's important to be mindful of how you store your woollen clothing. For longer-term storage, ensure that garments are clean and dry. It's also helpful to add moth repellents, such as cedarwood or lavender sachets, to your wardrobe. |
