As the temperature drops, our thoughts turn to warm and cosy jackets and coats. A coat is one of the most frequently worn items in your winter wardrobe so it’s important to choose well so that each time you wear it, you feel as good as it looks. To ensure you keep warm this winter and for many to come, we have created carefully crafted coats made from natural fabrics and filled with environmentally and animal-friendly recycled down.

What keeps us warm
When it comes to keeping us warm, the filling in coats and jackets is incredibly important. Temperature insulation is created by trapping air in between material fibres - the more air that is trapped, the warmer the clothing feels. One of the best examples of this insulation is natural down. Down is a fluffy very fine feather coating found on the inner, close-to-skin layer of waterbirds, especially in the chest area. This coating not only keeps the birds warm but also helps them float due to the air that’s captured within.
Although many synthetic fillings were invented to reproduce the unique properties of down, natural down is still unrivalled. It has great thermal insulation properties, is extremely lightweight, breathable, durable and fully biodegradable.

Down and animal rights
Although down is associated with great warmth, unfortunately it is also associated with animal cruelty concerns. Whilst down is usually a by-product of food industry and traditionally part of honouring and using every part of the animal, there other practices which are concerning. For example, down feathers can be removed from the bird whilst it’s still alive which can be done repeatedly and is a very cruel practice. Poetry has always made sure that our down is cruelty-free and are now committed to using only recycled down filling in our collections.
Recycled down from Re:Down
We have partnered with Re:Down to use only recycled down from post-consumer waste in our collections. Down is very durable and mostly remains in good condition even after the shell fabric is worn or damaged which means that still usable down is usually destined to go to waste. Re: Down collects used down products before they end up in the waste cycle, extract the virgin down inside, and recycle it so it can be used again.

How it works
Re:Down partners with textile recyclers and hotel chains who want to renew their bedding products and donate the used ones. Any products containing down are separated and sent to Re:Down’s facilities where they join other down products such as coats, duvets and pillows to be opened up and the feathers removed.
The raw material is sorted by separating the fine down clusters from the feathers then the down is washed with warm thermal water, ensuring optimum cleanliness and best recovery of the down clusters. Finally, down is dried at 135 celsius degrees for 30 minutes resulting in a perfectly sterilized down. No chemicals are used in the reprocessing of Re:Down. The down is washed with soap and the sterilization happens through the high temperature of the drying process.
The leftover shell fabrics are further recycled into insulation materials and any broken feathers and down fibres – which are rich in organic nitrogen - are used to create organic fertilizer.

When you buy a Poetry coat or jacket with a recycled down filling you can be assured that no cruelty was involved in the collation of the down and that down that would have previously been sent to landfill, has a second life.
