This year we have created our first yearly Material Report to look at the natural fibres we use, the stories behind them and see how we can improve the sustainability of our fabrics even further.

COTTON
As a natural fibre cotton is renewable and biodegradable but its production, if not properly managed, can have adverse effects on the environment. We have started to switch all of our cotton over to organic cotton and in 2022 49% of the cotton we used was certified organic, compared to 0.95% of the world’s total cotton production.

LINEN
Linen is one of the world’s most sustainable fabrics, made from flax plants grown mainly in France. It accounts for around 35% of the fibre we use.

WOOL, CASHMERE & ALPACA
In our autumn and winter collections we use wool, cashmere, alpaca and yak for their warmth and comfort. For each of these yarns we work closely with a single reputable supplier so that we know the fibres have been sourced ethically.

HEMP
Hemp is arguably the most sustainable fabric in the world, made from the stems of cannabis plants which grow easily with minimal intervention. The yarn made from hemp is very strong, making clothes that wear beautifully over time.

VISCOSE
Viscose is a man-made natural fibre made from dissolved wood pulp or other plant cellulose. It is a renewable and biodegradable fibre, but its production process can contribute to deforestation or pollution if the wood used is not processed or sourced responsibly. More than half of the viscose fibres we use are LENZING™ ECOVERO™ viscose.
ECOVERO™ is a cellulose fibre that has been made from ethically-sourced wood pulp. The technology developed by LENZING™ ensures water-impact and CO2 emissions are reduced by up to 50% compared to other wood pulp fibres.

SILK
Silk, made from the cocoons of silkworms that feed on mulberry leaves, is the only naturally occurring filament yarn, which means it is made of continuous strands that run the whole length of the yarn. There is nothing quite like it for drape and comfort against the skin. Many brands substitute polyester for silk but we prefer the real thing.
